Getting the Best Call Quality on Mobile

Updated July 22, 20264 views0 found helpful

Practical tips to keep mobile calls clear — choosing the right connection, using a headset, and avoiding the things that cause choppy audio.

Calls on the ReliaRing app travel over your internet or mobile data connection, so call quality depends mostly on that connection. The good news: a few simple habits keep your calls clear. Here's what makes the biggest difference.

Start with a good connection

  • Strong Wi-Fi is usually best when you're in one place. Stay near the router and avoid crowded networks.
  • A solid cellular signal (LTE/5G) works well when you're out and about.
  • Weak or fluctuating signal is the number-one cause of choppy audio. One or two bars of Wi-Fi or cellular often sounds worse than you'd expect.

Let the app switch networks smoothly

If your Wi-Fi is weak, your phone sometimes clings to it instead of using better cellular data. If calls are rough on marginal Wi-Fi, try turning Wi-Fi off so calls use cellular, or move closer to the router.

Use a headset

A wired or Bluetooth headset almost always sounds better than holding the phone to your ear, and it reduces background noise and echo for the person you're talking to.

Reduce what competes for your connection

  • Pause large downloads, uploads, or video streaming during calls — they eat the bandwidth your call needs.
  • On shared Wi-Fi, other people streaming or gaming can affect your calls.

Cut background noise

  • Move somewhere quieter for important calls.
  • A headset with a boom microphone helps callers hear you over surrounding noise.

Quick checklist when a call sounds bad

  1. Check your signal — move to better Wi-Fi or cellular coverage.
  2. Switch to a headset.
  3. Stop any downloads or streaming on your device.
  4. If on weak Wi-Fi, try cellular instead (or vice-versa).
  5. End and redial — a fresh call often picks a better path.

If calls are consistently poor everywhere, it's worth checking your home or office internet — see the call-quality guides in the Troubleshooting section, and keep the app updated.

If the problem is calls not ringing at all (rather than sounding bad), that's a notifications issue — see Push Notifications for Mobile Calls and Messages.
