A fax machine encodes a page as tones. Most internet phone services carry those tones the way they carry speech: through a voice codec, over a connection that tolerates a lost packet because a human ear does not notice one. A fax does notice.
T.38 is the international standard for fax over IP. The gateway demodulates the tones back into the page data they encode, carries that data as IP packets with redundancy, and re-modulates it for the machine at the far end. What crosses the network is the page itself, not a recording of it.

How do I send a fax?
You can send faxes two ways: (1) Email-to-fax: Simply email your document to [faxnumber]@fax.reliaring.com — your mail client typically attaches it as a PDF. (2) Web portal: Upload a PDF or TIFF directly in the ReliaFax dashboard and enter the recipient's fax number.
How do I receive faxes?
When someone sends a fax to your ReliaFax number, we convert it to a PDF and deliver it to your email inbox within seconds. Pro and Toll-Free plans also include OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to make your faxes searchable.
How does ReliaFax protect sensitive documents?
ReliaFax uses TLS encryption for all transmissions, maintains detailed audit logs, and stores all fax data in Canadian data centres with AES-256 encryption. We are working toward formal compliance certifications. Contact us to discuss your specific security requirements.
What file formats can I fax?
The ReliaFax web portal accepts PDF and TIFF directly. Email-to-fax accepts any attachment your mail client can convert to PDF (most word processors and spreadsheet apps will export to PDF when you send to a fax address). Maximum file size is 50MB per fax.
Can I port my existing fax number?
You can port your existing fax number to ReliaFax. The porting process typically takes 5-10 business days depending on your current carrier. Your number continues to work during the transition.
What is T.38 protocol?
T.38 is the international standard for sending faxes over IP networks (Fax over IP). It provides superior quality and reliability compared to basic audio-based fax transmission. All ReliaFax transmissions use T.38.
