What Teams Direct Routing Does (and What It Does Not)

Updated July 26, 20261 views0 found helpful

Direct Routing adds real phone calling to Microsoft Teams. Here is exactly what changes in Teams, and what stays the same.

Direct Routing makes ReliaRing the phone company behind Microsoft Teams. Your staff keep using the Teams app they already have, and gain the ability to dial outside numbers and receive calls from them.

What you get

  • Outbound and inbound phone calls from inside Teams, using numbers from ReliaRing.
  • A phone number for each person you enable. One Canadian or US number is included with every seat.
  • Emergency calling, including 911 and the 933 test number, on its own dedicated path.
  • Shared minutes. Your plan's included minutes are pooled across everyone on the account rather than being locked to each person.
  • Two Canadian voice gateways. Calls fail over between them automatically.

What does not change

Direct Routing carries phone calls. It does not change anything else about Microsoft Teams, and it does not move other ReliaRing features into the Teams app. These are not part of the integration:

  • Text messaging (SMS or MMS) inside Teams
  • Sending or receiving faxes through Teams
  • ReliaRing video meetings inside Teams
  • Syncing your ReliaRing availability with Teams presence
  • Syncing call schedules with the Teams or Outlook calendar

Messaging, fax and meetings are all still available in the ReliaRing portal and apps — they just are not surfaced inside the Teams client.

What you need before starting

  • A Microsoft 365 Global Administrator to approve ReliaRing once.
  • A Microsoft Teams Phone licence for every person who will make calls. This comes from Microsoft, not from us.
  • A Teams Administrator who can run a short setup script we generate for you.
  • A validated emergency address for each calling user.
