ReliaRing offers several products, and not all of them need a 911 address. The rule is simple: if a product can place a phone call to 911, it needs an emergency address on file. If it cannot place voice calls, it does not.
Here is how that plays out across the products.
Products that need 911 setup
These products let you or your team place outbound calls, so the law requires a registered emergency address before calling is turned on.
| Product | What it is | Why it needs 911 |
|---|---|---|
| ReliaRing (cloud phone system) | Your full business phone system | You place voice calls, including 911 |
| ReliaTrunk (SIP trunking) | Connects your own phone system, Microsoft Teams, or Webex to our network | Calls originate through us, so 911 must be registered |
| Microsoft Teams / Webex Calling | Calling through Teams or Webex on our network | These place voice calls, so 911 applies |
| E911 (standalone) | 911 registration for numbers you keep with another provider | Its entire purpose is emergency registration |
For any of these, set up your address under Emergency Dialing → Locations & Registrations. Until you register an address and acknowledge the 911 limitations, outbound calling stays switched off. See Registering and Updating Your 911 Address.
Products that do not need 911 setup
These products never place an outbound voice call to 911, so there is nothing for you to register.
- ReliaFax (online fax). Fax sends and receives documents, not voice calls. You cannot dial 911 from a fax service, so no emergency address is needed.
- ReliaForward (call forwarding). A forwarding number simply sends incoming calls onward to a real phone you already have — your mobile, a landline, or another line. When you dial 911, you do it from that destination phone, and its own provider handles the emergency call. ReliaForward is not placing the call.
- ReliaVerify (line monitoring). ReliaVerify runs automated test calls to check that your important lines (like elevator or alarm phones) are working. It does not let a person place calls, so it never dials 911.
Quick way to tell
Ask yourself: "Can a person pick this up and dial an outside number, including 911?"
- Yes → it needs a 911 address (ReliaRing, ReliaTrunk, Teams, Webex, standalone E911).
- No → it does not (ReliaFax, ReliaForward, ReliaVerify).
A note on mixed accounts
Many businesses use several products at once — for example, ReliaRing for phones plus ReliaFax for documents. In that case, you only register 911 for the calling side. Your Emergency Dialing area appears whenever you have at least one product that can place calls, and it covers all of them from one place.
