Registering and Updating Your 911 Address

Updated March 15, 20264 views0 found helpful

Add your emergency address, check that it validates, and connect each phone number and device so 911 calls reach the right location.

Registering an accurate emergency address is what makes 911 work on your ReliaRing service. This guide walks you through adding a location, confirming it is valid, and connecting your phone numbers and devices so a 911 call is sent to the right place.

If you are new to internet-based 911, read How 911 Works on an Internet Phone Service first.

Before you start

  • Have your complete physical street address ready. Emergency addresses must be a real street address in Canada or the United States — a P.O. box will not work.
  • Include the suite, unit, or floor if you have one. The more precise the location, the faster responders can find you inside a larger building.

Step 1: Add an emergency location

  1. In the portal, go to Emergency Dialing → Locations & Registrations.
  2. Click Add Location.
  3. Give the location a name you will recognize, such as "Main office" or "North workshop", and choose a type (Home, Work, or Temporary).
  4. Start typing your address in the search box and pick the match, or fill in the street address, suite/unit/floor, city, state or province, ZIP or postal code, and country.
  5. Click Validate to check the address against the emergency database.

What the validation result means

  • Validated — the address was confirmed and is ready to use.
  • Needs a small correction — accept the suggested spelling or format, then save.
  • Could not be confirmed — this can happen with brand-new construction or rural addresses. You can drop a pin on the map to confirm the exact spot, and we will use those coordinates.

Step 2: Set your active location

Your active location is the default address used for 911 when you dial from your account.

  • On the Locations & Registrations tab, open the location you want and choose Set Active.
  • A banner confirms that emergency calls will now be dispatched to that address.

If different phones live at different addresses, you can give each device its own location — see Step 3.

Step 3: Assign a location to each device (optional)

If you have phones in more than one place — say a desk phone at the office and a softphone at home — assign the correct address to each one:

  1. Open the Devices tab under Emergency Dialing.
  2. Find the device and click Change next to its E911 Location.
  3. Pick the location for that device.

Any device you do not set individually uses your active location automatically. Every device must have a location before it can use 911.

Step 4: Register each phone number

The Registrations tab connects a specific phone number to an emergency location. The active registration for a number decides where a 911 call from that number is routed.

  1. Go to the Registrations tab and click New Registration.
  2. Choose the phone number.
  3. Choose the emergency location for that number.
  4. Optionally set a callback number that 911 can use to reach you back — otherwise your own number is used.
  5. Enter a caller name (usually your business name) and create the registration.

A new registration first shows as Pending while we set it up on the emergency network, then becomes Provisioned. Click Activate to make it the live registration for that number. Each active registration is a billable emergency endpoint — see Billing → Rate Lookup for the current monthly amount.

Updating your address

Keep your address current. Whenever you move, add a location, or a team member relocates:

  1. Go to Emergency Dialing → Locations & Registrations.
  2. Open the affected location and edit the address, or add a new location and set it active.
  3. If you registered specific numbers to the old address, update those registrations too.

After any change, wait a few minutes for it to reach the 911 network, then confirm it with a safe 933 test call. See Testing Your 911 Setup Safely with 933.

Troubleshooting

  • "E911 location required" warning. You have not registered an address yet. Add one in Locations & Registrations — outbound calling stays off until you do.
  • Address will not validate. Double-check spelling and try the suggested format. For rural or new addresses, use the map pin. If it still fails, contact support and we will help.
  • A number is missing from the registration list. Only numbers on your account appear. If a number you expect is not there, reach out to support.
