To send voice and text notifications, ReliaAnnounce needs a sending number — the number your calls and texts come from. Your first one is included at no charge. Set it up at Announcements → Sending Numbers.
Toll-free vs local
- Toll-free number (recommended) — one number covers both the US and Canada for voice and text. It needs a one-time verification before texting turns on (more below).
- Local numbers — a separate number per country. Choose these if you want a local presence; US texting requires a registration step, while Canada does not.
Get a number
- Click Get a toll-free number (or a US or Canadian local number).
- Search — for local numbers you can enter an area code.
- Pick a number and Buy & assign. Your first number is free; extra numbers bill at the shown rate.
Voice calling works right away. Texting turns on once the number is verified or registered.
Why toll-free verification takes a few days
Toll-free texting has to be verified before messages can flow. This is an industry requirement that confirms a real, legitimate business is behind the number, which protects recipients from spam. In ReliaAnnounce:
- Once you have a toll-free number, click Submit for verification.
- Verification is free and typically takes about five business days.
- Meanwhile, voice notifications work; texting switches on automatically once verified.
You can check progress anytime with Refresh status. If it is ever rejected, you will see the reason and can update and resubmit.
US local texting registration
If you use a US local number for texting, US carriers require a one-time registration (an anti-spam program for business texting) before texts can send. Voice works while registration is pending. There is a one-time vetting fee, which is not refunded if the carrier rejects the registration. Canadian local numbers need no registration.
Tips
- If you send to both the US and Canada, a single verified toll-free number is the simplest setup.
- Submit toll-free verification (or US registration) as soon as you get the number, so texting is ready when you need it.
- You can always send voice notifications while text verification is in progress.

How long does verification take? Toll-free verification is usually about five business days.
Do I need this for email notifications? No — a sending number is for voice and text. Email works without one.
