Vanity Numbers: Custom, Memorable Numbers

Updated July 22, 20264 views0 found helpful

Get a number that spells a word or follows an easy pattern. How vanity numbers work and how to search for one in ReliaRing.

A vanity number is a phone number that's easy to remember — either because it spells a word on the keypad (like 1-800-FLOWERS) or because it follows a simple pattern (like 555-1000). The right one can make your advertising work harder, because customers remember it and dial it without looking it up.

Two kinds of memorable numbers

Word (phoneword) numbers spell something on the keypad:

  • 1-800-FLOWERS
  • 1-888-CALL-NOW
  • 555-CAFE

Pattern numbers are just easy to say and recall:

  • 555-1000
  • 555-1234
  • 800-777-7000

Why businesses use them

  • Memorable: easier to recall from a billboard, radio ad, or business card.
  • Brand-building: a word number reinforces who you are every time it's shared.
  • Word-of-mouth friendly: customers can pass it along without writing it down.

The keypad, for phonewords

If you're thinking of a word, here's how letters map to digits:

DigitLetters
2A B C
3D E F
4G H I
5J K L
6M N O
7P Q R S
8T U V
9W X Y Z

Keep words short and easy to spell, and choose something tied to what you do (CALL, BOOK, HELP, and your industry all work well).

How to search for one

  1. Go to Phone Numbers → Buy Numbers.
  2. Choose your country and a number type (local or toll-free both support vanity picks).
  3. Use the pattern search to look for numbers that contain the digits you want. If you have a word in mind, convert it to digits using the table above and search for that sequence.
  4. Browse the matches. If your first choice isn't available, try a different toll-free prefix (for example, 888 instead of 800) or a shorter word.

Good to know

  • Availability isn't guaranteed. The most popular words and patterns get claimed quickly, so have a few backups in mind.
  • Prices vary. Highly sought-after vanity numbers cost more. Check the price shown next to each number, or use Billing → Rate Lookup.
  • Show both forms in your ads. Print the word and the digits together (for example, 1-800-EXAMPLE and its number) so people can dial either way.

Bringing a vanity number with you

If you already own a vanity number elsewhere, you can transfer it to ReliaRing instead of searching for a new one. See Transfer Your Existing Number: Step-by-Step.
