Not every phone number can move between providers. Before you start a transfer you can ask directly — ReliaRing checks the number against our carrier network and tells you, number by number, whether it can move.
Running a check
The transfer wizard runs one for you. Go to Phone Numbers → Porting, select + Transfer a Number, enter your numbers on the first step, and select Check Portability.
Every check you run is kept on the Number Checks tab of the same page, so you can look back at what you asked and what came back. Select any check to expand it and see the per-number result.
What the results mean
Can be transferred — the number is eligible. That is not a guarantee the transfer will succeed: it still depends on the details on your account matching your current provider's records, and on your provider releasing it. But nothing about the number itself is blocking you.
Cannot be transferred — the check comes back with a reason from the carrier. The common ones are:
- The number is a test or reserved number (anything in the 555 range, for example).
- The number is not in good standing with your current provider — an unpaid balance or a suspension will block a transfer.
- Your account has a port-out lock or freeze on it. Providers often enable these by default; you have to ask them to lift it.
- The number is in an area our carrier network does not serve.
What to do about a "cannot be transferred" result
Call your current provider and ask two questions: is there a port-out freeze on my account, and is this number in good standing. Between them those explain most negative results, and both are things only your provider can change.
If they confirm the number is unlocked and in good standing and the check still fails, contact ReliaRing support with your check result and we will look at it with our carrier network.
A check is not a transfer
Running a check creates nothing and commits you to nothing. It does not reserve the number, does not notify your current provider, and does not start a transfer. When you are ready, carry on through the wizard — see Transfer Your Existing Number: Step-by-Step.
