Moving a Number to a Different Location

Updated July 26, 20264 views0 found helpful

Move a number from one of your sites to another without releasing it and buying it again.

If your business has more than one location on the account, you can move a number from one to another. You do not need to release the number and buy a new one — moving keeps the number, its history and its configuration.

How to move a number

  1. Go to Phone Numbers → Your Numbers.
  2. Open the number you want to move.
  3. Choose to move it, and pick the destination location.
  4. Confirm.

What you need to know first

  • The destination must be a location on the same account. You cannot move a number to a different customer account this way — that is a transfer, and support handles it.
  • The destination location must be active.
  • You cannot move a number to the location it is already on.
  • Emergency addresses do not follow the number. Moving a number to a new site does not update where its 911 calls go. If the number is used for outbound calling from the new location, review its emergency registration afterwards.

If the move fails

Some accounts created before we introduced per-site carrier records are missing the carrier-side site information a move needs. If you see an error mentioning a missing site, contact support — this is something our team fixes on the account, and it is not something you can resolve from the portal.

Moving people rather than numbers? If a staff member has changed desks, you probably want to reassign their extension rather than move the number.
