Keeping Your Existing Phone Number When You Sign Up

Updated July 26, 20264 views0 found helpful

How to bring your current number to ReliaRing at signup, and why you get a temporary local number to use in the meantime.

You do not have to change your number to move to ReliaRing. Choosing to bring your number across is called porting, and you can start it during signup or during account activation.

What happens when you choose to port

Three things happen at once:

  1. A porting request is opened for the number you want to keep. It starts as a draft — the full details, authorisation letter and a copy of your current bill are completed afterwards in the portal.
  2. A temporary local number is provisioned in the same local calling area as the number you are porting. It is live immediately.
  3. The temporary number becomes your main number, so calls work and your caller ID shows a local number from day one.

You are never without service while the port is in progress.

Why a temporary number

Porting a number between providers takes several business days and the exact cut-over time is set by the losing provider, not by us. Waiting for it would mean days with no service. The temporary number bridges that gap.

When the port completes, your real number takes over as the main number and the temporary number is retired.

What you need to finish the port

Starting the port at signup only opens the request. To submit it you will need, from Phone Numbers → Porting:

  • The name and account number exactly as they appear on your current provider's bill
  • A recent copy of that bill
  • A signed Letter of Authorisation

Details that do not match your current provider's records are the single most common cause of a rejected port.

What can go wrong

  • We could not find a temporary number in your calling area. Occasionally there is no local inventory. Your porting request is still created and intact — contact support with the reference number shown and we will source one.
  • The port is rejected. Usually a mismatch between what you told us and what your current provider has on file. Correct the details and resubmit; the temporary number keeps working throughout.

What this does not cover

  • Numbers outside Canada and the United States follow a manual process — contact support before starting.
  • Toll-free numbers port on a different timeline than local numbers.
