Using Your Own Phone (BYOD)

Updated July 22, 20261 views0 found helpful

Connect a personal cell phone or softphone app to ReliaRing. Learn what is supported, how to request approval, and what to expect once approved.

BYOD stands for "bring your own device." It lets you use a phone or app you already own - your personal cell phone or a softphone app on your computer - to make and take work calls through ReliaRing. Because it connects to your company's phone system, personal devices need admin approval first. This keeps your business calls secure.

What you can connect

You can add:

  • A web browser phone - call from a browser on your own computer, nothing to install.
  • A personal IP phone or softphone app - use a softphone app (or a compatible desk phone you own) on your own device.

Request approval for your device

  1. Go to Hardware → My Devices.
  2. Click Add BYOD Device.
  3. Choose the device type - Web Browser or Personal IP Phone.
  4. Give it a nickname you'll recognize, like "John's iPhone" or "Home Laptop."
  5. Add a few details if asked (make, model, operating system, and the softphone app you plan to use).
  6. Submit. Your device is sent to your admin for review.

What happens next

  • Your device shows Awaiting approval on the My Devices page.
  • Your admin reviews it and either approves or declines it.
  • Once approved, you'll receive secure sign-in details to connect your device, and it's ready for calls.

Admins can approve a personal device with different levels of access, so yours may be set for limited or full use depending on your company's policy.

What to expect once you're connected

  • Work calls come and go through your ReliaRing extension, keeping your personal number private.
  • Call quality depends on your internet or cell connection - a strong Wi-Fi or data signal gives the best results.
  • If your company issues you an extension and features, they apply to your BYOD device too.

If your device is declined

Your admin may decline a device that doesn't meet company policy. If that happens, ask them what's needed - some companies only allow the official mobile app, or only certain kinds of devices. The official ReliaRing mobile app is always the simplest supported option (see the Mobile Apps section).

Frequently asked questions

Will my employer see my personal texts or apps? No. BYOD only connects the work calling side. It doesn't give your company access to your personal phone's contents.

Can I remove my device later? Yes. Go to Hardware → My Devices and choose Remove Device. You can also sign it out remotely at any time.

Tip: Give your device a clear nickname when you add it. If you ever need to sign it out remotely, you'll know exactly which one to pick.
