The ReliaRing softphone runs inside your web browser, so a little setup makes calls sound clear and stay connected. Here's everything you need.
Use a supported browser
Browser calling works best in a current version of a major browser:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Mozilla Firefox
- Apple Safari
Keep your browser updated. Calling relies on features that only work well in recent versions, so an out-of-date browser is the most common cause of trouble.
Allow microphone access
The first time you place a call, your browser asks permission to use your microphone. Choose Allow. If you accidentally blocked it:
- Click the padlock (or site information) icon in your browser's address bar while you're on the portal.
- Find the Microphone setting and set it to Allow.
- Reload the page.
Without microphone permission, callers won't be able to hear you.
Use a good audio device
- A wired USB headset gives the most reliable, clearest audio.
- Bluetooth headsets work, but can occasionally drop or lag.
- Built-in laptop microphones and speakers work in a pinch but may echo.
To pick which microphone and speaker the softphone uses, see Softphone Audio: Microphone and Speaker Setup.
Have a steady internet connection
Calls are carried over your internet connection, so a stable connection matters more than a fast one:
- A wired connection is ideal. Strong Wi-Fi is fine.
- Avoid making calls while large downloads or video streaming are hogging your connection.
- If calls break up on Wi-Fi, move closer to your router or switch to a wired connection.
A few more tips
- Stay signed in on a secure (https) page. The portal always loads securely, which is required for microphone access — you don't need to do anything special.
- Allow pop-ups for the portal if you want to use the pop-out phone window. See Pop the Softphone Out Into Its Own Window.
- One softphone at a time. If you open the portal in several tabs, use the softphone in just one to avoid confusion.
- Private/incognito windows can block microphone access or reset permissions each time — use a normal window for calling.
