What Is SIP Trunking? (ReliaTrunk Overview)

Updated July 22, 20261 views0 found helpful

SIP trunking connects your existing phone system to the public phone network over the internet. Here is what ReliaTrunk does and who it is for.

ReliaTrunk is our SIP trunking product. It connects a phone system you already own — an on-premise PBX, a cloud PBX, or a calling platform like Microsoft Teams or Cisco WebEx — to the public phone network, so your users can make and receive regular phone calls over your internet connection.

If you are already happy with your phone system and just need reliable, cost-effective calling behind it, ReliaTrunk is usually the right fit. If you want a complete cloud phone system instead, look at ReliaRing.

A few terms, explained

You will see three words a lot. They are simpler than they sound:

  • SIP is the standard "language" phones use to set up calls over the internet. (It stands for Session Initiation Protocol — you do not need to memorize that.)
  • A trunk is the connection that carries your calls between your phone system and our network. Think of it as the pipe your calls travel through.
  • A channel is one call. A trunk with 10 channels can handle 10 calls at the same time. When you size a trunk, you are really deciding how many simultaneous calls you need.

Why businesses choose SIP trunking

  • Keep the phone system you already have. No need to replace desk phones or retrain staff.
  • Pay for calling, not hardware. There are no physical phone lines to lease.
  • Scale up or down easily. Add channels when you grow; you are not tied to fixed line counts.
  • One provider for calling and numbers. Your phone numbers, calling, and emergency registration all live in one portal.

What ReliaTrunk includes

  • Standard SIP trunks for any compatible phone system or PBX.
  • Microsoft Teams Direct Routing — add real phone calling to Microsoft Teams.
  • Cisco WebEx Calling — add phone calling to WebEx.
  • Trunk groups and failover — combine trunks so calls automatically reroute if one path has a problem.
  • Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) — keep an existing carrier and route it through our platform.
  • Health monitoring — see channel usage, call quality, and failed calls.
  • Emergency calling (E911) — register a real street address for each number so 911 works.

Plan options

ReliaTrunk has two plan styles. You choose one when you create a trunk:

  • Pay-As-You-Go — a monthly trunk connection fee plus per-minute usage drawn from your prepaid wallet. No channel commitment. Best for lower or unpredictable call volume.
  • Unlimited Channels — a flat monthly price per channel, so your channel cost is fixed and easy to budget. Calls are still charged per minute. Best for steady volume where you want a predictable base.

We do not list rates here because they change. To see current pricing, go to Billing → Rate Lookup or visit our pricing page.

Getting started

  1. Add the ReliaTrunk product (or Teams / WebEx calling) to your account.
  2. Open SIP Trunking → Trunks and click Add Trunk.
  3. Follow the setup guide for your phone system.

Important: Calls to 911 only work once you register a street address for your numbers. See our emergency calling (E911) guides before you go live.
